Al’s Playbook

“I worked on the culture because that was the kind of company I wanted to run.”

After 50-plus years of thousands of leadership decisions, Al hopes the one that was encoded in the company’s DNA is his belief that people who enjoy their work have clients who enjoy working with them. He never needed financial proof that happy employees mean happy clients. It just made intuitive sense.

I’m not a religious person by any means, but I think the Golden Rule is important. We like to treat people the way you’d like to be treated. We put it in our credo and values statement, and everybody has all that and everybody sounds alike. But I think I’ve established a culture for our people to really enjoy coming to work. I feel sorry for people who say they hate Monday mornings. I know we all like Friday afternoons, but you can’t hate Monday mornings.

It’s been said there’s a Midwestern work ethic, and I think that’s really true. There’s a low-key, real, authentic kind of feeling. We’ve tried to establish that in our culture, helping our people be the kind you want to be with. We try to hire people who take clients seriously but don’t take themselves too seriously.

When we win new business, more often than not it’s because of the chemistry factor. Every firm can tell you about their track record and case studies, but it’s chemistry that wins the day. In the final analysis, culture makes the difference in retaining employees and clients.
